Principal Investigators
L. Masae Kawamura, MD
Dr. Kawamura is the Director of the Tuberculosis Control Section of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. In addition, Dr. Kawamura is the Co-Principal Investigator for the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Tuberculosis Trials Consortium and numerous CDC-funded projects.
In 1998 Dr. Kawamura was appointed to the Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis by then Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala. Prior to assuming her current position, Dr. Kawamura worked for ten years as a tuberculosis clinician and served as Medical Director for the University of California, San Francisco, Urban Health Study. Her international experience includes a one-year post in Bhutan, where she served as Physician-in-Chief of the Tuberculosis and Infectious Disease Ward and was a consultant to the National Tuberculosis Programme.
Philip C. Hopewell, MD
Dr. Hopewell is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He is also the Co-Principal Investigator for the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center, as well as numerous studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Over the past decade, Dr. Hopewell has served as president of the American Thoracic Society, the California Tuberculosis Controllers Association and the North American Region of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. He has served as a consultant to state, federal and international agencies, including the national tuberculosis programs of Peru and Columbia, the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. Dr. Hopewell is an Associate Editor for Tubercle and Lung Disease and has served on the editorial boards of several academic publications.
