Regional Capacity-Building in Low-Incidence Areas

This project is developing and evaluating regional strategies to improve tuberculosis control and move towards its elimination in a low-incidence area. The low-incidence area includes the states of Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. The research questions are:

  • "What are the successful regional interventions?"
  • "What is required to implement these successful regional interventions?"

Each of the four states has differing TB epidemiology and TB control program structure, but they share the common challenge associated with maintaining TB program and clinical expertise in the context of low TB incidence and few resources.

Regional interventions were developed and prioritized through a needs assessment and consensus process that involved the four low-incidence states as well as the project's Principal Investigators: Dr. Charles Daley, Chief, Division of Mycobacterial and Respiratory Infections, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver; Dr. Randall Reves, Medical Director, TB Clinic of the Denver Public Health Department; and Dr. Charles Nolan, former Director of Seattle and King County Public Health TB Control Program. Current work is focused on formal evaluation of each intervention to identify best practices for a low-incidence region.

Regional tools that have been evaluated and are available for others to use include:
