Proposed Approach to Tuberculosis Control and Elimination in the Low-Incidence Region of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming
Purpose This publication was composed to support advocacy efforts by describing why TB is an important problem and what it takes to control and move towards elimination of TB in the low-incidence region of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. It proposes the addition of a regional structure to strong state tuberculosis programs to perform tuberculosis control core functions and attain surge capacity for treating complex TB cases. It may serve as a model of an epidemiologic profile to describe TB across a low-incidence region.
Background The TB Epidemiologic Studies Consortium Task Order 6 (TO6) focuses on developing, implementing, and evaluating regional tools for TB control and elimination in low-incidence areas. TO6 is being implemented through the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center of the University of California, San Francisco, and involves four low-incidence states in the western U.S: Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.
To address these states' TB control program needs, regional interventions and products were developed and prioritized through a consensus process that involved the four states as well as other partners. The product here is an advocacy document which describes why policy-makers and funders should care about TB in the region, and the objectives, staff and resources needed for TB control and elimination in the region.

Project SponsorPATCE was created as a part of Task Order 6, Regional Capacity-Building in Low-Incidence Areas, a five-year project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Tuberculosis Epidemiological Studies Consortium (TBESC). The project grant was awarded to the University of California in San Francisco through its Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center.

Additional programmatic and epidemiologic materials were requested from the state TB programs of Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. The document was written by Task Order 6 project staff in close collaboration with the Principal Investigators (Dr. Chuck Daley, Dr. Charlie Nolan, and Dr. Randall Reves) and the four state TB Controllers (Dr. Christine Hahn-ID, Denise Ingman-MT, Cristie Chesler-UT, and Alex Bowler-WY). All errors and omissions are the responsibility of the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center.
