Target Audience: U.S.-based clinicians and others who provide services to foreign-born patients at risk for TB.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this training participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and understand the different TB screening procedures for foreign-born persons based on type of entry into the US, including the new 2007 Technical Instructions, and apply this knowledge to patient care.
  2. Understand the etiology and epidemiology of TB among the foreign-born in the U.S. and apply this knowledge to TB risk assessment and control strategies.
  3. Summarize current understanding of the effect of prior BCG vaccination on tuberculin skin testing in comparison to the interferon gamma release assays and apply this knowledge in the interpretation of patient results.
  4. Explain the differences in approach to TB diagnosis, treatment, and prevention overseas compared to the U.S. in order to more effectively guide TB management decisions in foreignborn patients in the U.S.
  5. Recognize the cultural issues that may arise in the management of foreign-born TB patients to deliver more effective and appropriate care and improve adherence to treatment.

Course Format: Includes case-based discussion, didactic lecture, and a question and answer session.
